Where Te Puia actually is
Te Puia sits at 20 Hemo Road, on State Highway 30, in the Whakarewarewa geothermal valley on the edge of Rotorua township. The same grounds hold the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and a kiwi conservation programme alongside the geysers, so it reads as a proper destination rather than a single attraction bolted onto a car park — worth allowing time for if you are combining Te Pō with a daytime visit on the same trip. If you are staying somewhere outside the usual visitor strip, it is worth double-checking whether your accommodation falls inside one of the shuttle's pickup zones before assuming a transfer is available to your door.
If you're staying in central Rotorua
A complimentary shuttle can be requested from selected hotels, with pickup running through zones around the lakefront, the central city and Fenton Street. Requests are best made earlier in the day rather than left until you are getting ready to leave — check your specific listing for exactly how and when to arrange it, since not every booking option includes the shuttle automatically, and the exact cut-off time can vary by season and by how full the evening's shuttle run already is.
Driving yourself
Te Puia has its own car park on Hemo Road, and central Rotorua is only a few minutes away, so driving is a straightforward option if you would rather come and go on your own schedule or are staying outside the main shuttle zones. It is also the more flexible choice if your evening is bracketed by other plans, since you are not tied to a shared pickup and drop-off window.
Coming from Auckland or Taupō
Rotorua sits roughly 230 kilometres south-east of Auckland — about two and a half to three hours by road — and about 80 kilometres north of Taupō, roughly an hour via State Highway 5. Most visitors treat Te Pō as one evening within a longer stay based in Rotorua itself rather than a special day trip from either city, but both are realistic if Rotorua is a stop rather than your base.
Timing your arrival
Arrive with a buffer before the stated start time rather than cutting it fine — the evening opens with dinner, and a late arrival means missing part of the buffet rather than easing in quietly during a ceremony. If you are booking the Te Pō Combo, remember it starts substantially earlier, in the mid-afternoon, ahead of a guided walking tour before the dinner-and-performance sequence begins, so double-check which start time applies to the option you have actually booked.
If you're combining it with a day trip
Because Te Pō starts in the early evening, it pairs reasonably with a full day spent elsewhere in the Rotorua area — the geothermal parks, the lake, or a drive out toward Taupō — provided you are back in good time for your pickup window or your own drive to Hemo Road. Building in a margin matters more here than for a daytime attraction, since arriving late costs you part of the dinner rather than just part of a queue.
Flying into Rotorua directly
Rotorua has its own regional airport with domestic connections, which some visitors use instead of driving up from Auckland or across from Taupō. If you are flying in specifically for an evening at Te Pō, allow enough buffer between landing and your pickup or drive time — regional flight schedules can be tighter than the long-haul connections most international visitors are used to, and Te Pō does not hold a table for a delayed arrival.
